BEIJING: A growing middle and upper class in China has led to rising demand for specialised services, including pet cemeteries.

The annual Qingming, or tomb sweeping festival, is a time when the Chinese remember their departed loved ones.

Graves are cleaned and decorated with flowers and some might even bring food offerings.

But unlike other graveyards, these 3,000 graves in Beijing are the final resting places for pets belonging to upper and middle class residents.

The Beijing Baifu Pet Heaven Animal Burial Centre has been around for more than a decade but demand for the after-death services it provides, started to pick up more recently.

Business has doubled in the last two years and it now has an average of about 200 cremations and burials a month.

"More people have become emotionally attached to their pets. In the past, a burial would have been enough, but now they want more. From the grave design to the tombstone, there are many different styles," said Mi Mei, an employee at the centre.

There's even a luxury section for pet owners who are willing to fork out more money for bigger plots.

A standard burial package, including the land, starts at 4,000 yuan (US$630) and there is an annual maintenance fee of about 720 yuan (US$110).

On top of that, some owners spend nearly US$5,000 more on various add-ons, like customised kennels and glass displays that can repel dust.

Baifu said their customers are not limited to just those in Beijing. There are also pet-owners who come from Tianjin via train just to have the carcasses of their pets cremated.

Baifu added these pet owners are willing to go the distance as such services are not easily available in other Chinese cities.

But while there's no shortage of animal lovers in China, the country lacks proper laws to regulate how people dispose of their dead pets.

There are dozens of underground crematories and cemeteries.

And in many cases, dead animals are thrown out with the garbage, posing a health threat to the public.

For Baifu, it recognises the need for some regulation and is working to set up an association to push for proper guidelines in this area.

As for grieving pet-owners, they are content with having a place to remember their beloved pooch.
